Addis Merkato is a large open air marketplace in the Addis Ketema district in Addis Ababa. It is located in the center of the city and consists of a large concentration of retail stores, public, semi-public and private offices, wholesale markets and warehouses. The continuous growth of traffic has increased the intensity and duration of congestion and the extent of the dangers in most of the busy places in Addis Ababa. The city administration is striving to implement measures to improve traffic that can effectively reduce traffic congestion and increase security in the Merkato area. PB CONSULT as part of a consortium was commissioned to design the traffic improvements with a focus on pedestrian traffic, modern city logistics and general traffic calming.
