Redevelopment of the Nuremberg Volksfestplatz

28. March 2024

In 2023, the city of Nuremberg commissioned us with the partial refurbishment of the Volksfestplatz, which is located in a historically significant setting and is part of the former Reich Party Rally Grounds. Since 1953, the square has played an important social and economic role alongside the so-called Congress Hall, both as a venue for the spring and autumn folk festivals and other major events.

The maximum use of the site over the past almost 70 years has resulted in a need for refurbishment, which has now been realised through a partial refurbishment of the most heavily used areas. The actual construction work began in January 2023. In the run-up to this project, we carried out the planning and, together with the City of Nuremberg, the awarding process for the relevant trades last year.

The project proved to be particularly challenging for everyone involved due to the time constraints. Due to the guaranteed staging of the two folk festivals in spring and autumn 2023, the construction work not only had to be interrupted, but the site had to be fully usable for the smooth staging of the two folk festivals.

The renovation measures included soil remediation to increase the load-bearing capacity in the installation areas of the heavy rides with an area of around 14,000 m², the site drainage of approx. 2,000 m of combined sewers in need of renovation and the replacement and upgrading of the lighting masts to energy-saving LED lamps.

Partial refurbishment completed on time

The project was completed just in time for the start of the Nuremberg Spring Festival on 30 March 2024, which prompted Dr Andrea Heilmeier (Economic and Science Officer of the City of Nuremberg) to explicitly point out in a press release from the City of Nuremberg that not only was the time frame for this project adhered to, but also the planned budget.
