Mobility concept Wolfsburg city centre

26. July 2024

The city of Wolfsburg faces the challenge of creating a holistic mobility and transport concept that not only meets current needs, but also ensures a climate-resilient and attractive future. We are delighted to be developing this concept together with the city of Wolfsburg.

A vision for the future of urban mobility is unfolding in the heart of Wolfsburg. With the development of innovative projects such as ‘BraWo City’ and ‘Nordkopfquartier Mitte’ as well as the redesign of the central bus station (ZOB), a new chapter in urban dynamics is emerging. These initiatives are more than just structural changes; they are the beginning of a transformation that aims to breathe new life into the city centre and increase the quality of life. The increase in the proportion of housing and the expansion of office, commercial and retail space require a reorganisation of both moving and stationary traffic. The environmental network plays a decisive role here: it must guide the traffic development of the city centre and improve both supra-regional accessibility and the local quality of life.

The focus is on promoting cycling and walking in order to offer an attractive and sustainable mobility alternative. At the same time, accessibility for motorised private transport remains guaranteed in order to enable full integration into the urban fabric.

In this context, the ‘Nordkopfquartier Mitte’ and ‘Nordkopfquartier Ost’ development plans are of particular importance. They form the basis for urban development and must be brought into line with the Nordhoffachse masterplan, which envisages a medium to long-term perspective for the neighbouring Nordkopf districts.

The collaboration with ‘Henning Larsen Architects’ and the development of three urban planning variants that do justice to the unique location of the northern entrance area of the city centre are crucial to the success of this undertaking. The selected variant will set the direction for the further planning process and ensure that Wolfsburg's city centre is led into the future as a vibrant regional centre.
