PB CONSULT provides database for ADAC consumer study on night trains in Europe

26. September 2024

Against the backdrop of sustainable cross-border travel options, night trains are experiencing a rapid comeback, as a large number of new night train connections have been established in recent years and existing connections have been continuously expanded.

There is now also a wider range of services to major European cities in Germany. While the night train is seen as a beacon of hope in terms of climate protection and CO2 emissions, different national regulations for technology, infrastructure and operation pose various challenges for both providers and potential users of night train connections.

The desk research ‘Night Trains Europe 2024’, which PB CONSULT was commissioned to carry out as a test partner in December 2023, was intended to examine the current range of night train connections in Europe for ADAC e.V. as an independent consumer protection organisation in the field of mobility and tourism. The study focussed on the transnational accessibility of popular cities that are worth travelling to by night train. To this end, we analysed around 100 theoretically possible routes, taking 21 transnational connections as an example, in terms of the overall duration of the connection, number of transfers and waiting times, ticket purchase (in particular the possibility of booking throughout) and ticket price (in some cases, several sections have to be booked) - with mixed results.
